Despite already owning foundries and car parts businesses the Nissan name was not used in motoring until 1933. It was initially only used as an abbreviation of Nihon Sangyo for stock market purposes. Nissan Motor Co was officially founded in 1934. Since then it has grown to the 6th largest car maker in the world behind Toyota, General Motors, VAG, Hyundai and Ford.
Nissan has a long history of collaborating with other manufacturers. They partnered with Ford to produce the Terrano/Maverick. They have also worked with VW, Alfa Romeo, GM and LDV. In 1999 Nissan were facing severe financial problems, so entered into an alliance with Renault. It was the first Alliance of its kind between a French and Japanese manufacturer with such distinct brand identities.
