The First Of Its Kind

While SUV’s have been about for quite a while, BMW named the X5 an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) instead. This was because they wanted to emphasize its on road capabilities as well. It heralded the start of using car underpinnings for SUV’s, rather than the more traditional truck. The X5 itself is based around the 5 Series platform; a trend Mercedes adopted the following year on its second generation M Class.

From E to F

The latest generation of BMW’s has seen a shift form the tradition E development numbers, to a new F designation. The new X5 will be the F15. It’s styling follows the already well received design cues in the new 3 and 5 series, and it will also be the first X5 to offer a couple of two wheel drive options, although the four wheel drive options will still be available.
